Five recently graduated high school students received a total of $45,000 in scholarships to Ohio Technical College this past Saturday night at Dells Raceway Park, an ASA Member Track in Wisconsin Dells, WI. The students received scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 for their participation in the program through the partnership with the American Speed Association and Ohio Technical College.
The students spent the summer working with a race team that competes weekly at Dells Raceway Park. One student even competes in their Bandit division.
Along with the team performance on the track, students also had to keep a log book of what they were doing throughout the summer and submit an essay at the beginning of what they hoped to gain and another essay at the end reviewing what they learned from the experience.
Larry Pond, National Director of the ASA - Student Educational Series, Randy Dziadowicz, OTC National Coordinator, and Scott Sauerbrei, Dells Raceway Park Track Manager presented the awards to the students during the intermission.
Josh Bonick of Boyd, WI received the Track Manager Award that includes a scholarship of $20,000 to attend Ohio Technical College. He will start classes on October 4th and will be majoring in the Collision Repair with custom paint & graphics program. "I was just shocked that after working hard and going through what I did that I ended up getting it," Bonick said. "I thought I would be getting a $10,000 scholarship or something. But, I never would have thought that I would have received the $20,000 scholarship."
Bonick is part of Corey Jankowski's team at Dells Raceway Park. Jankowski is the current point leader in the Late Model division and this week is second overall in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship standings.
Ethan Mashuda of Princeton, WI is part of the Bobby Kendall crew and received a $10,000 scholarship. He will be majoring in the Power Sports Technology program.
Conrad Rothenburger of Portage, WI competes in the Bandit division and received a $7,500 scholarship. He will be majoring in the High Performance and Racing Tech program.
Kyle Pettis of Rubican, WI received a $5,000 scholarship and Tom Diehn of Sussex, WI received a $2,500 scholarship. Both are part of Rich Schuman's Late Model team. Pettis will be majoring in the High Performance & Racing Tech program while Diehn will be in the Classic Car Restoration program.
"This was my first visit to Dells Raceway Park and I am excited about the future the ASA - Student Educational Series has there," Larry Pond said. "This was our first year that ASA and Ohio Technical College worked with Scott Sauerbrei and his staff. Everyone is pleased with the outcome and very excited about next year as we will see the number of participants grow there. Randy and I had an opportunity to talk to many teams and current high school students in the pits about next year and we are very optimistic. We would like to thank track owners Joe Graziano and Lance Fielitz for allowing us to bring this program to their track. They have a great facility for racing."
"Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the ASA - Student Educational Series at Dells Raceway Park. Joe Graziano and Scott Sauerbrei worked very hard with ASA and Ohio Technical College to make this a success at their track," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "We are thrilled to help these students achieve their goals in life. They will get a great education at Ohio Technical College and we wish them the best of luck and nothing but success."
