WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (July 2, 2011) - Derek Childs' racecar picked a heck of a time to start fading away. With point leaders Rich Schumann Jr., Davey Pennel and Mike Lichtfeld closing fast, Childs had just enough to hang on for his first win in the Budweiser Late Models Saturday night at Dells Raceway Park.
Childs, of Poynette, claimed the lead from pole-sitter Larry Schotten on lap six and was shadowed by Schumann on two separate occasions before claiming victory.
"The car went away at the end there. It was getting pretty loose off," Childs explained. "Schumann gave me a lot of pressure, but we held him off for the win tonight."
Not only was Schumann on the offensive on this night, but there were several occasions where he was forced to go on the defensive. Schumann swapped positions with Davey Pennel several times during the second half of the race.
Pennel claimed the second spot after a restart on the 24th lap and looked to chase down Childs. However, as the green-flag run continued, Schumann's racer began to gain momentum. Schumann caught Pennel on lap 31 and made the pass to reclaim the runner-up spot just one lap later.
Schumann methodically pulled in Childs until he was within striking distance. Schumann attempted to look high and low on several occasions, but could not negotiate his way into the lead.
Childs said he knew the pressure was going to be coming before the end of the race.
"My spotter told me those guys were coming from the back and I knew we were running out of time at the end with the car going south," he said. "I'm glad we held them off."
Schumann settled for second-place honors, Pennel was third, Mike Lichtfeld finished fourth and Mike Beyer crossed the line in fifth.
An ironic twist accompanied Child's victory. Last year Davey Pennel put his number 29 in victory lane on North American Cup Weekend. Two years ago Childs grabbed the win in his 29.
"Two years ago that was our first feature win ever, it feels pretty good to keep the streak going."
The win keeps Childs in the title conversation after a slow start to the season.
"After the first night of wrecking out of the feature and not having a lot of patience, we've kind of calmed down and run pretty well making the dash and running top fives," he said.
"Schumann is going to be tough to catch, but I think if we keep running as well as we have we might have a pretty good chance."
Sauey Smooth in Sportsman Win
Reedsburg's Clifton Sauey raced side-by-side with Becky Grabarski for 24 of the 25 laps in the RacingOnline.com Sportsman feature event Saturday night. In close proximity all race long, Sauey capitalized after Grabarski slipped in turn two of the final circuit.
Grabarski led the field to green alongside Kelsey Schultz. After a slight bobble on the outside line, Schultz fell into a door-to-door scrum with Sandy cook for the third spot. It was that bobble which allowed Sauey to slide to the inside line on Grabarski.
While the first two rows disputed first and third positions, the faster qualifiers remained boxed in. Eric Melby, Mike Winters and Scott Luck simply had to wait until the lead quartet of racers fell in line.
On lap 18 Schultz and Cook decided their dispute when Schultz surged ahead after a slip and some contact with Cook. The open space gave Winters, Melby and Luck their first look at the top five.
With only seven laps remaining Winters, Melby and Cook tracked down Kelsey Schultz and closed in on the lead pair. However, those drivers did not get an opportunity and Sauey and Grabarski hit the line side-by-side. As they raced out of turn two, Grabarski slid sideways, surrendering the lead to Sauey. Winters was able to take second, Melby third and Luck fourth. Grabarski was forced to settle for fifth.
'Hohl'din Them Off!
Even a game of musical cars couldn't keep Baraboo's Mark Hohl from picking up his second win of the season Saturday in the 25-lap Schultz Small Engine Pure Stock Feature. Hohl held off defending Champion Dave Trute and his car owner Bill Zeman who had swapped mounts earlier in the night.
Bic Arendsee paced the initial circuit with visitor Ben Capek to his outside. Capek took the lead the following lap and kept Arendsee at bay. While Ben Capek led his brother Jake Capek took second from Arendsee.
As Jake Capek made his move into second, Hohl slid to third with Zeman and Trute in his tire tracks. Hohl bested Jake Capek for second on lap 10 and took the lead from Ben Capek just three laps later.
Zeman secured second on lap 14 with Trute following suit one lap later. The two then locked into a duel as Hohl began to open up his advantage. Zeman and Trute closed in momentarily, but Hohl proved to be stronger. Jake Capek finished fourth and Ben Capek was fifth.
The duo of Zeman and Trute swapped cars early in the evening due to an engine issue on Zeman's 16 car. Zeman qualified Trute's #2 as Trute and crew worked feverishly on the 16 car - the car Trute raced to a Championship last season. Trute's effort to race allowed him to maintain his point lead over Zeman.
Rozek Wins Third of 2011
Portion By: Amanda Peschek
Current division point leader Steven Rozek of Tomah made his way into victory lane this holiday weekend. During the 18 lap Fire Rescue Supply Bandit feature at the Dells Raceway Park, he proved he possesses the talent and skill to quickly take and keep the lead.
When the green flag waved, Rozek had his eye on the front and began to make his way through the field. By the fourth lap, he, along with Gene Bailozor, went three wide to pass the second-place car of Ren Revels. From there, Rozek went to work on then current leader, Terry Lafleur.
Within the next lap, Rozek was able to make the first place position his own. Lafleur slowly faded back as Rozek easily glided ahead of the Bandit pack. It was as though he had the victory already in his hands. However, a caution tested his skill once again.
The yellow flag led to a restart and a five lap shootout for the finish. With little time left, Rozek felt the pressure of other drivers competing for that much wanted position. Determination gave him the ability to keep his position as the checkered flag waved. He was followed by Andrew Portzen, Haley Kapp, Kurt Kolden and Gene Bailozor across the finish line.
McCune Scores Must See Win
Jimmy McCune of Toledo, Ohio was pressured by Santa Rosa Calif.'s Jo Jo Helberg through all 50 laps of the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series BioBased U.S./Must See Racing Nationals feature Saturday.
Although Helberg remained within striking distance throughout the entire event, he was unable to make the pass on McCune who led from the drop of the green and survived several restarts.
