JOHNSON RETURNS TRIUMPHANTLY, KAPP IS YOUNGEST WINNER

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (June 25, 2011) - Mark this down as one of the few times a driver was happy to see rain - especially if it was somewhere else. With rain canceling a PASS North race, Brian Johnson Jr. jumped a plane from Quebec Saturday morning and flew through the Budweiser Late Model field at Dells Raceway Park Saturday night.

In the Fire Rescue Supply Bandits Haley Kapp became the youngest DRP weekly division feature winner at the age of 14 years and 17 days.

Johnson's second win of 2011 capped off a 40-lap, caution-free main event in the late models. Johnson followed Rich Schumann Jr. through the field from his ninth-place starting spot and captured the lead from Mike Lichtfeld with seven laps remaining.

Lichtfeld seemed to have the feature in hand early on as he broke away from pole-sitter Larry Schotten. Five laps in, Schotten faded to the outside and was passed by Robert Kendall, Kelsey Bauer, Schumann and Johnson.

By lap 10 Lichtfeld had built a substantial lead over Kendall, who had a comfortable advantage over Bauer in third. Bauer had her hands full with Schumann and Johnson pressuring to get by. On lap 16 Schumann dived onto the concrete in turns three and four to open up the inside line and made the pass on Bauer. Johnson also slipped through the open door.

The duo of Schumann and Johnson caught Kendall just four laps later and began to survey lines around the young Montello driver. Schumann slid to the inside at the halfway point and grabbed second. Johnson and Kendall went toe-to-toe for two laps before Johnson surged into third.

As the laps continued to click off, Schumann not only had to worry about trying to track down Lichtfeld, but also had to be concerned with Johnson. Johnson pressured several times with a dozen laps remaining. With ten laps to go Johnson wedged his nose under Schumann's racer in an attempt to open up the inside lane. One lap later Johnson moved into the runner-up spot.

"He pinched me down just a little bit but not bad," Johnson said. "He was actually clear, but I drove into the corner a little harder and I got into the back of him pretty good. He didn't move up the race track really. I got two left side tires down into the dirt off two and got under him to pass him."

Johnson immediately closed the gap on Lichtfeld and began to pressure just a lap later. "I didn't think I was going to get to him that quick," he said. Within one lap I got to the inside and he just let me go."

As the handling on Lichtfeld's racer started to fade, Schumann took the second spot away on lap 37. Kendall secured fourth, and Kelsey Bauer notched her best DRP finish by rounding out the top five.

A 'Kapp'-tivating Win in the Bandits
Most 14 year olds are still dreaming of their first car and the chance to get behind the wheel. Haley Kapp is in her second year of Fire Rescue Supply Bandit action - and is now the youngest weekly division winner in Dells Raceway Park history.

Kapp stole the lead from Arch Preston with just four circuits remaining in the 18-lap feature event and held off a final surge from Preston on the final lap.

Early in the night Kapp set fast time and proved she had the machine to beat. However, a tough field of racers forced Kapp to earn every inch of territory.

Ripping through the field early, Kapp slid to fourth by lap two, and just four laps later grabbed the second spot by passing point leader Steven Rozek and Kurt Kolden. Rozek continued to hang with Kapp as the duo put pressure on Preston.

In tight quarters Kapp took the lead, but did not pull away from Preston. The two went toe-to-toe to the stripe, but Kapp emerged victorious. Rozek finished third, Kolden fourth and rookie Nate Fuller rounded out the top five.

Grabarski Frosts Winters

Mike Winters and Ron Grabarski swapped the lead back and forth over a dozen times as they tore around Dells Raceway Park in the 25-lap RacingOnline.Com Sportsman feature event. Grabarski led where it counted, and picked up his first win of the season.

Furious side-by-side racing highlighted the green-to-checkered event all the way through. Grabarski jumped to the head of the field when he broke away from Clifton Sauey at the outset. Just five laps in, Grabarski's sister Becky took the second spot away from Sauey, bringing Winters along into third.

Two laps after moving into second and third, Winters and Becky Grabarski went side-by-side to battle for the right to take on Ron Grabarski for the lead. On lap 11 Winters took the second spot away from Becky Grabarski and left her to dispute third with fast-qualifier Scott Luck.

Winters closed in on Ron Grabarski, and was credited with the lead on lap 23. However, Grabarski worked the outside line to perfection exiting turn four and racing to the stripe. Luck finished third, Eric Melby was fourth and last week's winner Daron Fish was fifth.

Trute Triumphs Again

After a one-week hiatus from Victory Lane, Dave Trute won his third Schultz Small Engine Pure Stock feature event in four tries. Trute tracked down Derek Childs and grabbed the lead with just two laps remaining in the 20-lap main event.

After setting fast time, Trute was placed at the back of the invert. Trute patiently worked his way through traffic and moved to fourth by lap 11. One lap later he made the pass on Kevin Gilding for third, and then maneuvered around early-race leader Doug Paul by lap 13.

With just six laps remaining Trute started to size up Childs. Trute worked to the outside line and raced jousted with Childs for two laps before securing the top spot for good. Childs held on for second, Gilding was third, Bill Zeman finished fourth and Paul finished fifth.
