Corey Jankowski is on a roll at Dells Raceway Park, an ASA Member Track in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Last season he captured the Late Model Championship in his rookie season and this season he has already visited victory lane twice. Now has the overall lead in the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship.
Jankowski started racing at DRP in their Super Stock division where he dominated season after season. Last year he moved up to the top division and is enjoying it, "It's really cool for us because I always like to be in the main event," Jankowski recently said. "And now ASA is looking at us and saying hey you could do something with Joe Gibbs Racing and I am like, Oh Yeah...I am liking this!"
He has a simple approach when it comes to the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship. "For the national title, I don't really race for points. I don't race for stuff like that, I just race to win," Jankowski explained. "I just do my best and when it is all said and done, championships are all extra credit to me. I just go out there and go 110%. That is all I can really do."
When asked if he did win the National Championship and got the tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing, he would see this as something special? "It would be another golden moment, another top in my career in racing," Jankowski said. "Last year was my top so far by winning the track championship in my rookie season."
And if he would win the National Championship, what kind of a driver would Joe Gibbs Racing meet? "Racing is all about positive things out there, the world is so negative on things you read in newspapers and such. Well, I'm a positive person, I like laughing, I love having fun and racing gives people a chance to get out of the bad world and get in the good world and makes a better place for everybody too," Jankowski exclaimed. "Especially when everyone can have fun and enjoy the great competition. I love it!"
Jankowski has an average of 1.5208 and has a slim lead over Rodney Cook, the current points leader at Ace Speedway in Elon, NC who has an average of 1.5041. Clint LaFont at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX is in third with an average of 1.4989 while Thomas Hill at Meridian Speedway in Meridian, ID is fourth with an average of 1.4578. Scott Broughton at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, WI rounds out the top-five with an average of 1.4078. Only 0.113 separates the top-five in the standings.
This championship is far from over and ASA officials expect to see a lot of movement in the standings as we go through the months of July, August, and September. Especially with some competitors who are not leading in their track point standings having higher averages to those leading their track standings.
"This is going to be fun!" Dennis Huth, ASA President exclaimed. "One week we will see a driver at the top of the standings and the next we have two passing him in the standings. This is far from over and it is going to get better. This shows how great the action is at the ASA Member Tracks. I would encourage everyone to visit their local short track this weekend and see for yourself."
