WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (May 14, 2011) - No matter how many Central States Region Super Cup veterans came knocking, 13-year-old Jordan Caskey had the answer. The youngster from West Chicago, Ill. led wire-to-wire to capture the 40-lap feature at Dells Raceway Park Saturday.
Caskey started alongside fast qualifier Jim Termanes in the 13-car field. The duo did battle in the ten lap heat race just prior to the main event, with Caskey unable to shake the veteran Termanes.
At the drop of the green Caskey and Termenas went side-by-side through the first two turns. As they hit the back straight, Caskey took advantage of the grip on the high side to motor past Termenas. Termenas then fell into a battle for the second spot with Tyler Brown and Joshua James.
Fading momentarily, Termenas crept up on Caskey as the race hit the ten-lap mark. Termenas was able to close the gap on several occasions, and even pulled even with Caskey, but was unable to make the pass.
After the first caution fell for a Zach Newland spin, Jamie Domski and Tony Velez methodically picked their way through the field. Domski reached the bumper of Termenas with 15 to go, but spun before he was able to make the pass.
The restart pitted Caskey against Termenas for a final time, with Caskey again breaking away. As he built his lead, Velez began to pressure Termenas for the second position. Meanwhile Domski utilized the new concrete inside groove to steal spots as the lap count dwindled.
Velez was able to swipe the second spot from Termenas with less than five laps to go and Domski worked his way past to get back into the top three in the final two circuits. Termenas finished fourth and Brown finished fifth.
Nuti Picks Up First Win Since '06 in Gladiator Enduro
It's been almost five years to the date, but Ryan Nuti found victory lane at Dells Raceway Park Saturday. Nuti, of Edgerton, Wis., weaved through lapped traffic after recapturing the lead from Mark Fogel in the final stanza.
The first 50-lap segment saw Jerard Pinkalla and Al Kuphal pace the 20-car field. Kuphal, a DRP Pure Stock veteran, took the helm and held on until mechanical issues brought his night to a premature ending after only 22 laps.
Pinkalla led until the first fuel stop when Nuti had crept into striking distance of the lead. Nuti took the lead shortly after the break and led up until the one-hundred-lap fuel stop.
As the green flag fell for the final 50-lap run, Fogel seized the lead from Nuti and began to pull away. Fogel's lead was short-lived however, as Nuti grabbed the lead back on the back chute 11 laps into the final 50. Two laps later Pinkalla closed in on the top two as the trio hit heavy lapped traffic.
With 31 laps remaining Pinkalla closed the gap on Fogel and worked lapped traffic to perfection to steal the runner-up spot. Pinkalla closed the gap on Nuti several times, but was unable to capitalize as Nuti ducked and dodged through lapped traffic.
Although he had to settle for runner up, Pinkalla was the top Outlaw driver, grabbing top prize in his division. Fogel finished third, Jerry Galloway was fourth and Mike Watson rounded out the top five.
Johler Victorious in Gladiator Small Cars
Des Plaines Ill.'s Mark Johler dominated the Gladiator Small Car 75-lap Enduro. Johler started mid-pack and dashed to the front of the field early in the race.
Unchallenged for most of the event, Johler stretched his final margin of victory to over a lap. Leo Bujak, Kyle Padfield, Matt Skarzynski and Larry Born rounded out the top five.
Dells Raceway Park gets its 49th season of racing under way on Saturday, May 21. The evening's events begin with the Automotion Burnout contest at 5:30. In addition, the Vintage Cars will be joining the four weekly DRP classes. Qualifying is at 3:30, Racing is at 6:30.
