POEHNELT CHARGES TO DELLS RACEWAY WIN
5/18/2013
WISCONSIN DELLS, WI - MAY 18, 2013 - A long time coming, Shane Poehnelt raced into Weaver Auto Parts victory lane Saturday night for only the second time in the late model veteran's career. Poehnelt held on through three cautions and a late race battle for the hardware. Scott Luck charged to the win in the sportsmen division while Travis Hancock, Dave Treu, Sr and Cory Talaska found victory lane in the pure stocks, bandits and legend cars respectively.

Poehnelt started the late model contest from the inside of row four, but quickly moved up. Larry Schotten held on to the lead from his pole starting position until Poehnelt worked his way through the field setting up a battle for the top spot on lap 10. John DeAngelis followed Poehnelt to the front and slid into second around Schotten just a couple of laps later. Poehnelt stretched his lead over DeAngelis and now first week winner Nick Nolden until Brent Edmunds spun in turn four bringing out the first caution on lap 22.

With DeAngelis and Nolden lined up in row two and fast qualifier Rich Schumann and Davey Pennel behind in row three, Poehnelt was feeling the heat on the restart. DeAngelis worked for the lead, but Poehnelt held on to the point until the second caution for a duo spin in turn two.

Poehnelt would be out in front alone, but this time the second, third, and fourth place cars all took the low line on the cone restart which allowed Schumann to pull up on the outside of row two. Schumann tried to move by on the top side, but before a lap could be counted, a chain reaction collision in turn four collected Nolden, Michael Sauter and Pennel. Nolden was done for the night while the others soldiered on. Again it was Poehnelt with DeAngelis and Schumann behind, but the result was the same with Poehnelt maintaining the lead for the final ten laps and bringing home the win. DeAngelis held on for second ahead of Schumann, Pennel and Corey Jankowski.

Scott Luck didn't need any luck on this night as the veteran was fast qualifier and took home the feature win for the sportsmen division. With the aid of only one caution for Gerry Junget's single car yellow, Luck charged through the field on the outside to capture his first feature win of the season. Dave Trute charged with Luck on the outside to finish second ahead of Mike Winters, Clifton Sauey and Ron Grabarski.

The pure stock feature seemed to be in the hands of 2012 champion Mark Hohl until the last turn of the last lap. Hohl found the lead early and paced the field during the caution free race. What he didn't notice was Travis Hancock working his way through the field on the outside. Over the last two laps, Hancock caught Hohl and the battle raged as the duo came to the final lap. Hancock found the power and by mere inches beat Hohl to the win. Jimmy Robinson added a third place finish to his feature win on opening night ahead of Becky Grabarski and Kevin Berg.

David Treu, Sr. was able to build a lead and edge out Steven Rozek for the bandit feature win. Jim Lapp, Ed Klug and James Junget raced home to complete the top five.

Cory Talaska earned the legend car feature win.

Next on Dells Raceway Park's 2013 schedule is the Cabin Fever 200 Weekend. The super late models will compete for the first time in a 99 lap feature event. The weekly late models, sportsmen and bandits are all racing Saturday night as well. It will be the only time this season fans will be able to see super late models and weekly late models on the same card. Special event pricing of just $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for students and just $5 for kids 5-9 is a bargain for this one-time special event. Spectator gates open at 4pm, qualifying at 5pm and the first race at 7pm. Over thirty hi-profile super late model teams are expected including the region's hottest driver Travis Sauter, veteran Rich Bickle, former champs Steve Rubeck and Dennis Prunty. Don't miss it.
